LEAP Initiative/General Education

North Dakota University System faculty members are leading the review of University System general education requirements based on the Liberal Education and America's Promise initiative.

A national initiative, LEAP champions the value of liberal education for individual students and for a nation dependent on economic creativity and democratic vitality. The initiative focuses campus practice on fostering essential learning outcomes for all students, whatever their chosen field of study.

LEAP seeks to engage the public with core questions about what really matters in college; give students a compass to guide their learning; make a set of essential learning outcomes the preferred framework for educational excellence and assessment of learning; and create new alignments between educational secondary and higher education.

North Dakota is participating in the Association of American Colleges and Universities' Faculty Collaboratives Initiative. The goal of this project is to develop a resource and innovation hub, as well as a curriculum for faculty professional development, which will be available to all faculty in North Dakota. The North Dakota information hub will become part of an interstate network reaching faculty in 10 LEAP states, helping faculty understand and participate in large-scale student success initiatives and bring effective practices into their own teaching.

For more information about this project and North Dakota's involvement, please contact:
Dr. Ryan Zerr (University of North Dakota): Director of Essential Studies and Faculty Fellow
Dr. Anne Kelsch (University of North Dakota): Director of Instructional Development and AAC&U Fellow

North Dakota public, tribal and private colleges are participating in a statewide discussion of general education review and reform. These campuses have signed the North Dakota General Education Constitution, a document that establishes expectations related to campus representation, periodic meetings, election of officers and voting.
