ART 101 Introduction to Studio Art An introductory studio art course designed to familiarize the non-art major with the basic painting, printmaking, sculptural, jewelry, and ceramic processes. ART 110 Introduction to the Visual Arts Study and analysis of artistic methods and meaning in the Visual Arts. ART 111 Introduction to the Visual Arts II ART 250 Ceramics I This course introduces basic hand-built techniques using coil, pinch, slab and drape along with understanding the properties of clay and the firing process. ART 120/220 Painting I Introduction to basic paints through a variety of materials. ART 122 Two-Dimensional Design A basic course in the study of two-dimensional design for the studio artist. ART 123 Color Theory Study of color properties and structural devices and their contribution to visual organization. Four studio hours per week. Prerequisite: ART 122 or consent of instructor. ART 124 Three-Dimensional Design A basic course in the study of three-dimensional design for the studio artist. ART 130 Drawing I Study and application of different drawing media, methods and techniques. ART 140 Crafts I Introduction to basic crafts. ART 150/250 Ceramics I Introduction to basic ceramic techniques. ART 170/270 Printmaking I Introduction to basic printmaking techniques and materials. ART 180/280 Photography I Introduction to basic Photography. ART 201 Art Methods for Elementary Education Methods of teaching art in elementary education. ART 204 Jewelry I Introduction to basic jewelry techniques, design, and materials. ART 205 Jewelry II A basic course into the history of jewelry. Learning to design and create in metal through the lost wax processes will be emphasized. Prerequisite: Basic Drawing or Design or consent of instructor. ART 210 Art History I A survey of western art from Paleolithic to the Renaissance. ART 211 Art History II Art survey of western art from Renaissance to the Present. ART 225 Water Media I Introduction to basic water media painting for the studio artist. ART 226/326 Water Media II ART 230 Drawing II Advanced study and application of different drawing media, methods, and techniques. ART 231 Figure Drawing I Introduction to basic figure drawing. ART 232 Figure Drawing II Continuation of problems introduced in Figure Drawing I. ART 251/351 Ceramics II Introductory course on origin, nature, and use of clay and glazes. Includes hand-building processes and basic wheel-forming methods. ART 260 Slide Photography A non-darkroom oriented class in slide photography emphasizing the aesthetic design and compositional aspects of this artistic medium. ART 265 Sculpture I Introduction to basic sculpture materials and techniques. ART 266 Sculpture II A study of visual expression in three-dimensional form with sculptural media and techniques of modeling, carving, and construction. ART 271 Printmaking II A basic course in the history of relief and silk screen printmaking. Fundamental relief and silk screen printing techniques, both traditional and contemporary, will be emphasized. Prerequisites exist. Commercial Art Transfer students art majors are expected to develop a portfolio to be evaluated by their receiving institution.
CA 101/101L Airbrush Illustration The drawing and rendering of objects as they are perceived under varying conditions. Students learn to render three-dimensional forms through observation and application of perspective principles. Fundamentals of form are explored in and out of the classroom, using various drawing media. Students study and use basic art and drafting tools, including the airbrush. CA 103/103L Intro To Electronic Imaging/Lab Emphasis is on basic digital photography and digital computer inputting. Covering Basic composition and photographic illustration. In-dept study on different digital cameras and storage devices. Also covering the relationship of digital photography to the commercial industry. Basic PhotoShop techniques are covered for use with photo retouching and photo restoration. Concurrent registration in or previous successful completion of CA 103L is required. CA 104/104L Basics of Studio Skills/Lab Introduction to the use of basic tools and materials used by the commercial artist. Instruction focuses on studio safety, organization and procedures. Concurrent registration in or previous successful completion of CA 104L is required. CA 105/105L Production Art/Lab An introduction to the fundamentals of pre-press preparation. An introduction to the printing industry and various printing processes. Includes a familiarity with industry terminology and tools-both manual and computer. Development of basic layout and design skills while working on numerous "hands-on" projects meant to enhance and broaden a participant's design and production skills. An introduction to using computers as a tool for accomplishing the above skills.Concurrent registration in or previous successful completion of CA 105L is required. CA 107/107L Design and Desktop Publishing/Lab A concentration on the functions of both operator and machine through a series of practical "hands-on" lessons on Macintosh computers. Includes a familiarity with terminology and procedures associated with publishing. Working with type, layout design, add graphics to a document and producing a professional-quality end product will be emphasized. Software: Adobe InDesign. (Additional programs introduced as necessary.)Basic computer skills, keyboarding, proofreading, editing, and printing are vital aspects of the course. Concurrent registration in or previous successful completion of CA 107L is required. CA 111/111L Introduction to Photography/Lab Emphasis on basic 35 mm photography and camera handling techniques. An introduction to the history and beginning of photography and how photographic techniques can be applied and put to use by the commercial artist. Darkroom work includes basic black and white processing and printing and an introduction to some advanced darkroom skills. Study and application of basic photographic compositional guidelines and the selection and display of photographs. Concurrent registration in or previous successful completion of CA 111L is required. CA 113 Design and Layout I Principles of typography and design as used in advertising layout. An introduction to theory of advertising and the study of various advertising media used in communication. Rendering techniques for efficient, computer rough layouts and accurate comprehensive layouts. Emphasis will be placed on the development of creativity and the study of modern advertising techniques as used by today's graphic designers, followed with artist presentation methods for the client. Concurrent registration in or previous sucessful completion of 113L is required. CA 113L Design and Layout I Lab Concurrent registration in our previous successful completion of CA 113 is required. CA 115 Typography An in-depth study of the art and technique of the printed word - an essential element of virtually all graphic design. An overview of the history of type and the ability to identify and create excellent typography are major outcomes of this course. Creative and technical typographic skills will be discusses and put into practice by means of in-class exercises and homework assignments. CA 115L Typography Lab Concurrent registration in our previous successful completion of CA 115 is required. CA 117/117L Digital Illustration/Lab An introduction to illustration with emphasis on the fundamentals of composition and design. Experience in the proper use of equipment and materials along with the development of professional studio skills. Concurrent registration in or previous successful completion of CA 117L. CA 201/201L Commerical Photography/Lab Review of basic photographic fundamentals and continued practice in 35 mm photography. Introduction to equipment, soft goods, and techniques used in a variety of professional applications. Emphasis placed on a photojournalism and commercial approach to photography. Practice in basic studio lighting techniques and advanced black and white work. Prerequisite: CA 111 and CA 107 or instructor approval. Concurrent registration in or previous successful completion of CA 201L. CA 202/202L Current Imaging Continued exploration of photojournalism and photo illustration. Study and application of photographs and photographic principles used in the field of mass communications, especially the area of publication design and advertising. Study and practice of current publication design techniques, including the use of computers, to color theory and working with color films and materials. Prerequisite: CA 201. Concurrent registration in or previous successful completion of CA 202L. Prerequisite: CA 201. CA 203/203L Commercial Illustration/Lab A study in advanced illustration through the application of sound chronological procedure. Developing the picture idea through research and reference. Additional emphasis placed on composition and color applications. Additional course work will include sketchbook assignments. Concurrent registration in or previsou successful completion of CA 203L. Prerequisite: CA 117. CA 204 Print Production/Lab An in-depth look at electronic publishing through a series of layout and design projects completed on a Macintosh computer. Develop a working knowledge of printing and pre-press terminology and procedures used by the industry. Understanding of reproduction processes for various publication print houses. Emphasis on black and white and full-color projects for reproduction. Understanding and working with type, scanning and graphics on a more professional level using industry standards is a vital aspect of this course. Concurrent registration in our previous successful completion of CA 204L is required. CA 207/207L Introduction to Multimedia/Lab An in-depth look at electronic production art through a series of layout design projects completed on a computer. Develop a working-knowledge of terminology and procedures used by industry. Understanding of reproduction processes for newspaper, magazine and print houses. Emphasis on black and white and multicolor projects for reproduction. Understanding and working with type, scanning and graphics on a more professional level using industry standards is a vital aspect of this course. Prerequisite: Instructor approval. Concurrent registration in or previous successful completion of CA 207L. Prerequisite: Instructor approval. CA 209/209L Design and Layout II/Lab the review and demonstration of basic commercial art skills studied during the two year period, concentrating on the design and production of portfolio quality projects specifically selected to demonstrate the capabilities and talents of the artist. The student will also design and prepare artwork for silkscreen production. Prerequisite: Instructor approval. Concurrent registration in or previous successful completion of CA 209L. Prerequisite: Instructor approval. CA 211 Audio-Visual Production An introduction to the skills needed and problems encountered when preparing materials for presentation. Introduction to techniques used in multi-image, multi-media, videotape, film and television production, and simple animation. Development and practice in the skills needed to produce and present audio-visual materials for education, promotional use and public relations using traditional and computer based methods and technologies. Prerequisite: Instructor approval. Concurrent registration in or previous successful completion of CA 213L. Prerequisite: Instructor approval. CA 213/213L Portfolio Presentation/Lab Portfolio planning and preparation, including selection, organization and professional presentation. Resume development, interview techniques and job application procedures are emphasized to prepare students for the work force. Prerequisite: Instructor approval.
