BISMARCK, N.D. - Bruce Furness, one of the finalists for the position of interim chancellor of the North Dakota University System, has withdrawn his name from the candidate pool. Dr. Larry C. Skogen, current acting NDUS chancellor, and Shane Goettle, J.D., are the remaining finalists.
In an email to the State Board of Higher Education today, Furness said, "After careful consideration, I have decided to withdraw as a candidate for the interim chancellor position with the North Dakota University System. While I do think I can create positive change within the system, I've decided that now is not a time when I am prepared to take on such a role.
I would like to remain involved and assist in any way possible, as I very much want to see the University System succeed in its endeavors.
I greatly appreciate the North Dakota State Board of Higher Education taking the time to speak with me as well as your continued interest in my candidacy. Please feel free to contact me if there's any assistance I can provide."
Board President Kirsten Diederich said, "We would like to thank Bruce for his interest and support of the university system. We appreciate his careful consideration of the importance of this role and the dedication it will take to be successful in the position. We wish him the best. Meanwhile, we are looking forward to interviewing our other finalists, who each have impressive qualifications and impeccable credentials."
Interviews of Skogen and Goettle are being scheduled during a special meeting of the SBHE on Monday, Sept. 16, beginning at 10:00 a.m. in the Dakota Room at Job Service North Dakota, 1601 E. Century Ave., Bismarck.
