Author and educator Heid Erdrich returns to Bismarck State College for a residency with students and a public reading of her poetry Monday, Feb. 10. The reading starts at 7:30 p.m. in BSC's National Energy Center of Excellence, Basin Electric Auditorium (304) and concludes with a book signing.

Erdrich gives presentations in BSC English classes on Monday and Tuesday of that week. Her appearance is part of BSC's Visiting Writers Series and free to the public.

In addition, Erdrich is conducting a writers' workshop Sunday, Feb. 9, at 7 p.m. in Room 116 of the BSC Library. Enrollment is limited and online preregistration is required at www.ndhumanities.org/spring-writers-workshops.html .

A member of the Turtle Mountain Band of Ojibwa, Heid grew up in Wahpeton, N.D. She earned a degree from Dartmouth College and two master's degrees from Johns Hopkins University in poetry and fiction. With her sister and well-known author Louis Erdrich, she founded the Turtle Mountain Writing Workshop and later Birchbark House, a foundation that serves as a clearinghouse for indigenous language literature.

Erdrich writes, teaches, and collaborates with others across artistic mediums. She is author of four poetry collections, most recently "Cell Traffic: New and Selected Poems." Other collections are "National Monuments" (08), "The Mother's Tongue" ('05), and "Fishing for Myth" ('97). She also co-edited "Sister Nations: Native American Women on Community" ('02) from the Minnesota Historical Society Press.

Recipient of two Minnesota State Arts Board fellowships, Erdrich has received awards from The Loft Literary Center and the Archibald Bush Foundation, and a Minnesota Book Award in 2009 for "National Monuments." Erdrich taught at University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minn., before leaving in 2007 to focus on her writing and to work with Birchbark House. She is online at http://heiderdrich.com/.

Erdrich's appearance is sponsored by the English discipline of the Arts and Communication Department, with grant support from the Bismarck State College Foundation. Partial funding also comes from the North Dakota Humanities Council, a nonprofit, independent state partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
