NDSU Libraries intern learns by doing

Posted on 12/21/2017

Brittany Boyer describes her internship at the NDSU Libraries as the experience of a lifetime.

The Mayville State University graduate spent fall semester taking a required practicum, or field experience, on the NDSU campus as she pursued her Master of Library and Information Science via distance learning from Texas Woman's University.

It was a hands-on time of learning and development.

During her practicum at the Main Library, she assisted with a "Native Voices" traveling exhibit and she had cataloging and metadata responsibilities. She also took an active role in the NDSU Libraries' strategic planning process.

"I was tasked with the responsibility of evaluating the NDSU Libraries along with 23 other academic research libraries in regards to their strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats," Boyer explained. "This was a great experience that I will value for years to come."

Working closely with NDSU Libraries personnel also gave Boyer new perspectives on her chosen profession.

"I observed the librarians in their true form, providing reference assistance and teaching students in the classroom," she said. "I was able to further develop my cataloging and collection development skills by working with donations. I also learned more about the institutional repository and the role it plays both in the library and with the students, staff and faculty."

Colleagues at the library praised Boyer's professional, friendly attitude.

"She did a really fine job. This experience has set a great foundation for establishing future library practicum and internship experiences," said Joe Mocnik, dean of libraries.

"Brittany's positive demeanor and attention to detail allowed her to contribute valuable assistance to department efforts during her practicum experience." said Rex Hughes, metadata and cataloging librarian.

Boyer said she loves everything about libraries and being a librarian is a true calling.

"I am infatuated with absolutely everything: helping people find books and answering research questions, copying and scanning things for patrons, the smell of the books and the view of the shelves," said Boyer, who grew up in the Fargo area. "I feel at home working in a library."

And she says her time at the NDSU Libraries has prepared her for a successful career.

"I am extremely grateful and will treasure the experience forever," Boyer said. "Thank you, NDSU Libraries, for creating the experience I'll never forget."
